Arlyn Andrews, PhD

Principal Scientist for Earth Observations

————

Dr. Arlyn Andrews serves as Principal Scientist for Earth Observations, supporting SilverLining’s Safe Earth System Research Initiative (SESRI). She provides scientific leadership for the Sustained Observations for Atmospheric Research (SOAR) initiative aiming to leverage commercial platforms to transform the global atmospheric observing system.

Dr. Andrews has measured atmospheric composition from Earth’s surface to the stratosphere using a variety of diverse platforms, including NASA’s ER-2 aircraft — a modified U-2 spy plane, high-altitude balloons and broadcast towers. She developed novel methods for using atmospheric observations to improve models of stratospheric dynamics and for tracking greenhouse gas emissions and removals. Her research aims to advance understanding of carbon uptake by oceans and terrestrial ecosystems and potential carbon:climate feedback mechanisms.

Dr. Andrews earned her Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science from Harvard University. Prior to joining SilverLining, she led the Carbon Cycle Greenhouse Gas Division within NOAA’s Global Monitoring Laboratory. She has been an active participant in the U.S. Interagency North American Carbon Program since its inception circa 2004. She served on the Climate Variability and Change panel supporting the Decadal Survey for Earth Science and Applications from Space (ESAS 2017), and she has been actively engaged with the NASA Carbon Monitoring System, the NASA Orbiting Carbon Observatory - 2/3 Science Team, and the US Global Greenhouse Gas Center, as well as WMO’s Global Atmosphere Watch and Global Greenhouse Gas Watch programs.
